Explore Steinbeckââ¬â¢s portrayal of Curleyââ¬â¢s wife in Of Mice and Men Of mice and men was set in America during the 1930ââ¬â¢s when the whole country was going through the great depression so no one had much money and it became hard for men to find jobs and keep them. This is why it is strange at the start of the novel when we are introduced to George and Lennie traveling together to find work. It was hard for men to find jobs alone and even harder for two men to find jobs together. During the great depression, women had no freedom and they couldnââ¬â¢t get jobs like the men tried to because the men had more power over them and controlled them. The men werenââ¬â¢t used to women being around them and the women were trying to look for jobs like the menâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ËShe had full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up. Her finger nails were red. Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages.ââ¬â¢ Steinbeck points out that she is wearing a lot of red which includes her make-up and clothes. The colour red connotes danger and love but also shows that Curleyââ¬â¢s wife wants a sexual relationship with one of the men. She was fully dressed in red too. ââ¬ËShe wore a cotton house dress and red mules, on the insteps of which were little bouquets of red ostrich feather.ââ¬â¢ The way that she dresses tells the reader that she wants to look good in front of the men and even though sheââ¬â¢s not dressed appropriately for on the ranch, she still chooses to dress like that and wants to show the men how good she looks. Throughout the novel, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is never called by an individual name, he is known to all the men on the ranch as ââ¬ËCurleyââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬â¢. She doesnââ¬â¢t have a name like all the other men do, which again shows that she is treated with no respect and referred to as an object. Steinbeck has portrayed Curleyââ¬â¢s wife like this so the readers can put their own view across on how they think she is and what they think she is like and how she behaves and the way she comes across as being ââ¬Ëa tartââ¬â¢ gives the readers a negative impression of her. The first impressions we got of her were negative as Steinbeck used language to describe her and put her across as ââ¬Ëa tart and flirtyââ¬â¢.
